CLEANING YOUR
RV REFRIGERATOR
Ordinary cleaning isn’t enough for most RV refrigerators, especially if the unit has been closed up with decaying food inside. Many of the refrigerator's materials are plastic and porous. They absorb stink to the core. Smells must be banished patiently, one step at a time.
Note: additional steps may be required depending on the type of refrigerator. Check your owner's manual.
1. Take everything out of the unit including trays and shelves. Discard any spoiled food where wildlife and pets can’t get at it.
2. Wash food containers in hot water with dishwasher detergent. (Put through a dishwasher or hand-wash while wearing rubber gloves.)
3. Wash removable refrigerator components (shelves, etc.) in warm, soapy water with a couple of tablespoons of baking soda in solution. Rinse and dry completely, preferably in the sun. Set aside.
4. Wash the interior with soapy water and perhaps bleach until it looks clean. Then wash with baking soda water mixed at the rate of 2 tablespoons soda per quart of warm water. Pay special attention to the gaskets, edges, nooks and crannies.
5. If there is a drain, remove and wash the plug and use a turkey baster to flush out the drain with baking soda solution. Leave the drain plug out to dry completely. Repeat if necessary. Leave the drain plug out until plug and drain channel are thoroughly dry.
6. If there is a drip pan under the refrigerator, empty and clean it completely. Check any signs of leaks and wood rot under the pan.
7. Once the unit is empty and completely clean and dry, fill it with crumpled newspaper or put in a tray filled with kitty litter, baking soda, activated charcoal or coffee grounds. Close the door and let things stand overnight. Remove contents and wash down the interior again with baking soda water. Dry and repeat with new newspaper or trays if necessary.
8. Remove dust and build-up from refrigerator coils
9. If your owner's manual suggests applying wax or other protective coatings, have them on hand to use as a final step.
10. If unpleasant smells continue to belch out of the vents after you re-start the refrigerator, run it empty overnight except for tray of baking soda or activated charcoal in the main unit and another in the freezer section.
