A First Aid Kit for Your RV, Part Two
Last week’s post started this two-part series on how to create your own RV first aid kit. From experts in medicine and first aid, here are additional things you may want to add.
* Rod Brouhard, a paramedic in California, advises everyone to take a CPR class, carry a cell phone, have medical information with you and “Keep a calm head.”
* If you’re taking a blood thinner or bleed too freely, ask your doctor about KytoStat bandages, which contain a special clotting ingredient made from shrimp shells.
* “I suggest adding a small supply of travelers checks,” says American Express spokesperson Joel Kaiman. “Extra cash might be needed for a first aid emergency such as an all-night pharmacy that doesn’t accept credit cards.” Travelers can’t always cash personal checks.
* David Sweeney, O.D. of InSight Vision Source in Atlanta reminds us to include first aid for the eyes.
* PSI brand accu-pressure wrist bands are a motion sickness cure recommended by Amy Herzog, who spends two months each year in her Winnebago Adventurer. “They’re a drug-free, cost-effective solution for nausea that can hit you on winding dippy roads.”
* When burned, “You can hold a hand under a faucet but what about a knee or shoulder?” asks Dr. Daniel Rifkin, pediatrician at Penn State Children’s Hospital. He recommends Burn Jel Plus. The gel transfers heat away from the burn and also contains Lidocaine for pain relief.
* Cathy Landberg is an R.N. who sells high-tech reflective tape to first responders. With it you can instantly turn your clothing and any objects into reflectors. Her tape is a specialty item, but less expensive reflective tape is sold in automotive, hardware and bicycle stores.
* Ask your dentist for a little dental wax, which can be put over the sharp edge of a broken tooth, crown or braces, to protect cheek and tongue until you can get to a dentist. Denture adhesive is a good temporary fix for a crown that comes off. Don’t use a permanent adhesive. It’s likely there is decay underneath and you don’t want to re-attach a crown over it. See a dentist.
